Malaysia is arguably one of the most diverse countries with a population comprising different ethnicities whose influences can famously be found in its rich cuisine. When you look around, you can still see traces of its colonial past in stately old building like the unfinished Kellie’s Castle and City Hall.

Even though most people believe Malaysia is all about bustling cities and shopping districts, you’d be surprised to learn that it still have rich natural landscapes. Malaysia tourism industry is booming with no signs of slowing down soon. But like any other country, it is essential to know one or two things before jetting off.

Let’s take you through some of the things you should know before visiting Malaysia for the very first time.

Things to Pack and Wear

Malaysia is a country close to the equator and enjoys a tropical climate. It is hot and humid for the most part of the year although the highlands tend to be cooler. Either way, there is no needto wear woolens. Be sure to carry with you lightweight clothes, like cottons and items with a loose-fit. Go for light colors as well and try as much as possible to avoid wearing black. It is important to note that exposing too much bare skin is frowned upon in this part of the world and will incur disapproving looks.

Malaysian Food

Like many countries in Southeast Asia, street food remains popular since it is cheap and delicious. You can find it almost anywhere but the best is in the capital of Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Apom balik (stuffed pancake), Rojak (fruit and vegetable salad) and koay chiap (duck and noodle soup) are among the most popular street foods in Malaysia.

Local Language

Before visiting Malaysia, you should take it upon yourself to learn one or two phrases in their local language that will help you get around places. There is a good chance that they may not speak English or your mother tongue. Phrases like what time is it and how much can help you big time in some situations.

Even though the locals might not appreciate your effort, they will certainly love you more for speaking in their language and shower you with more lover and warm hospitality. So take some time learning the local language before getting that plane ticket.
