Sony’s once steadfast approach to video game exclusives seems to be paving way to a new ad more player-friendly one. As per the latest reports, the Playstation 4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn is destined to come to PC later this year. This will be the first Sony-developed PS4 exclusive to launch on another platform since its release in 2017.  If you remember, Horizon Zero Dawn release was merged with widespread critical acclaim for its stunning visuals, immersive world, top notch writing and storytelling not forgetting the lead female protagonist.

Horizon Zero Dawn has been a hallmark exclusive title of the PS4 platform together with other hits such as Bloodborne (2015), God of War (2018) and Marvel’s Spider Man (2018). In the last seven years or so, Sony has been relying on games such as this to drive sales of its hardware and to keep consumers loyal to its brand.  In fact, Sony developed all the above-mentioned titles excluding Bloodborne. The decision to make Sony’s approach to exclusives more player-friendly three years later is like republishing Horizon Zero Dawn on PC. However, this does not come as a surprise since they have been loosening their grip on exclusivity over the last couple of years.

There have been a number of high profile compromises taking part with the most notable being relinquishing control over Fortnite players’ accounts. This action was aimed at allowing for cross platform play. Another high profile compromise is Sony’s announcement last month that longtime MLB series ‘The Show’ would also be going cross-platform. Players can also access Sony exclusives like The Last of Us without owning a PS3 or PS4 console using the PlayStation Now Cloud gaming service for some time now. Despite this, it will still be a big deal for Sony to open up one of its biggest and most successful exclusives to more players on other platforms. In fact, it is a clear indication that the company is going to have a different strategy for Playstation 5. Furthermore, future PlayStation 5 exclusives might see PC releases.
