Apple has unveiled a wave of new features coming to AirPods Pro later this year, focusing on enhanced user experience through gesture-based Siri interactions and improved call clarity with Voice Isolation. Announced at WWDC 2024, these features aim to make AirPods Pro an even more compelling choice for Apple users.

The biggest highlight is the introduction of head gestures for Siri control. This innovative feature allows AirPods Pro users to interact with the virtual assistant completely hands-free. You can confirm actions or respond positively to Siri prompts by simply nodding your head up and down. Conversely, shaking your head from left to right signifies rejection or a negative response. This intuitive approach is particularly beneficial when speaking out loud, such as on a crowded bus or in a quiet library, which might be inconvenient.

Siri Interactions extend beyond essential confirmations. Imagine being notified of a message while your hands are full. You can instruct Siri to read the message aloud with a nod, and with another nod or a head shake, you can dictate a quick reply. Similarly, these gestures can be used to answer or decline calls, manage notifications, and control various media playback functions without touching your phone.

The power behind these gesture controls lies in Apple’s next-generation H2 chip, which will be unveiled alongside the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) this fall. The H2 chip’s advanced processing capabilities are designed to accurately detect head movements and translate them into corresponding actions for Siri. This technology holds promise for even more intuitive gesture control applications.

Another exciting addition is Voice Isolation. This feature leverages advanced algorithms to filter out background noise during calls. Whether amidst a bustling coffee shop or a windy street corner, Voice Isolation ensures your voice remains crystal clear for the person on the other end of the call. This improves call quality significantly, especially for those who frequently use their AirPods Pro in less-than-ideal environments.

It’s important to note that gesture controls and Voice Isolation are exclusive to the AirPods Pro (2nd generation). However, other AirPods models have only been partially included. Apple announced that AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro (1st generation), and AirPods Max will all receive an update enabling Personalized Spatial Audio for gaming. This feature tailors the three-dimensional soundscape to the user’s unique head shape, creating a more immersive and realistic gaming experience.

The combination of gesture-based Siri interactions, Voice Isolation, and Personalized Spatial Audio paints a picture of a future where AirPods Pro seamlessly integrates with your daily routine. With intuitive controls, improved call quality, and an enhanced gaming experience, Apple is solidifying AirPods Pro’s position as a leader in the wireless earbud market.
