One of the world’s most celebrated male ballet stars has tragically passed away after falling from the balcony of his home in St. Petersburg. Born in St Petersburg in 1985, Shklyarov joined the Mariinsky Theatre troupe in 2003 and rose to principal dancer, the highest in the ballet world, in 2011. He starred in Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, and Don Quixote productions.
He also appeared as a guest performer at locations such as London’s Royal Ballet and New York’s Metropolitan Opera. He was renowned for his elegant, lyrical, athletic, and virtuoso performance style. He earned many accolades throughout his career, including the Leonide Massine International Prize in 2008 and an Honored Artist of Russia in 2020.
His wife and two children survive him. The ballet community has been mourning the loss of the beloved artist with heartfelt posts on Twitter and Instagram. “Sorry to hear about the tragedy of this magnificent dancer,” wrote former Mariinsky dancer Irina Bartonovskaya. “He was a very dear man and a public favorite; he adored his children.”
